It's easy to assume career preparation can wait until college - that's traditionally when internships start, when "real" career-building begins. But waiting has a cost that's easy to underestimate.

The competition doesn't wait. By the time a student reaches their second or third year of college - when internship applications genuinely start to matter - some of their peers have already been building real, demonstrable experience for years. That gap doesn't close on its own; it has to be caught up to, usually under much more time pressure than if it had started earlier.

Career clarity compounds - confusion does too. A student who's had real exposure to two or three fields by the time they choose a college major is making that choice with actual information. A student who hasn't is essentially repeating the same uninformed guess they made choosing a stream, just at a higher-stakes moment with less time to course-correct.

The first real internship is often the hardest one to get - and the most consequential. Recruiters for competitive internships are explicitly looking for signals that a candidate already understands the field and can do relevant work. Without any prior exposure, a student is competing for that first internship with nothing to point to except grades - while peers who started earlier have projects, feedback, and a track record to show instead.

What early exposure actually buys a family. Not a guaranteed outcome, but genuine optionality - the ability to make the stream decision, the college major decision, and the internship application all with real information instead of guesswork, and with a head start relative to peers who are only starting to think about this in their second year of college.

The earlier a student gets a real, honest look at what a career actually involves, the more informed - and less rushed - every decision after that becomes.
