You've probably heard some version of "AI is going to change everything" more times than you can count. Here's what that actually means for someone still choosing a career, without the hype or the doom.

AI isn't replacing careers - it's changing what the entry-level version of them looks like. A marketing analyst today spends less time on basic data-pulling than five years ago, and more time interpreting what AI-generated analysis actually means. A junior lawyer spends less time manually searching case law and more time verifying and reasoning about what an AI tool surfaced. The core judgment the job requires hasn't disappeared - the busywork around it has shrunk.

This makes real work experience more valuable, not less. If routine tasks are increasingly automated, the actual differentiator for an early-career hire becomes judgment, communication, and the ability to work with these tools intelligently - all things you only develop by doing real work, not by reading about a field in the abstract.

It also means "will AI replace this job" is the wrong question. A more useful question is: "what does this job's judgment actually look like, and can I develop that?" That's true whether you're looking at investment banking, marketing, law, or AI/ML itself as a career.

If you're specifically curious about AI/ML as a career, rather than just a tool other careers use - that's now genuinely one of the fastest-growing, most in-demand fields globally, and one where real hands-on project experience (actually training a model, not just reading about how models work) matters enormously for even getting a foot in the door.

Either way - whether AI changes the career you're considering, or is the career itself - the same principle applies: the way to find out if it's right for you is to actually do a version of the real work, not to guess from the outside.
