Career Quiz vs. Real Work: Why "Find Your Career in 10 Questions" Doesn't Actually Work

Outset

Career quizzes are everywhere - quick, free, and instantly gratifying. Answer ten questions, get a neat result: "You'd thrive in Finance!" The appeal is obvious. The problem is what they're actually measuring.
Quizzes measure self-reported preference, not actual fit. A question like "do you enjoy working with numbers?" only tells you how someone thinks they feel about numbers in the abstract - not whether they'd enjoy building a financial model at 11pm under a deadline, which is a very different experience than the idea of "liking numbers."
They can't account for the parts of a job nobody mentions in the description. Every real profession has a texture that never shows up in a quiz question - the pace, the type of pressure, the specific kind of thinking it demands hour to hour. A quiz has no way to simulate that.
They give false confidence, which is worse than no answer at all. A vague sense of uncertainty at least prompts more exploration. A confident, quiz-generated answer can shut down that exploration prematurely - "the quiz said Commerce, so that's settled" - when the underlying information was never strong enough to justify that confidence.
What actually works instead: trying a scaled-down version of the real thing. Not a full internship - that's often not accessible early enough - but a real, guided project in the actual field, with feedback from someone who does the work for a living. This surfaces the texture a quiz can't: whether the actual doing of the work feels right, not just the idea of it.
We built Outset specifically because we didn't believe a quiz could answer this question, and we don't think it can for your child either. A real project, reviewed by a real professional, tells you something a multiple-choice result never will.
